Snowfall in Fagu: A Winter Guide for Travellers

Does Fagu receive snowfall?

Yes. Fagu typically receives snowfall during the winter months of December to February, although timing and intensity vary from year to year — some winters bring several good snow spells, others are lighter. Because the property sits at 7,500 ft with open mountain views, even a modest snowfall turns the orchards and pines around the shire completely white.

What is winter in Fagu like?

Winter days are cold, crisp, and usually bright, with snow-capped mountain views on clear mornings — the same view our Deodar room's bay windows face. Nights get genuinely cold, which is exactly why warm rooms, heavy blankets, and hot fresh food matter more here than anywhere else. The village itself goes quiet, and on snowy days you may not want to leave the property at all.

Reaching Fagu in winter

The Himalayan Shire is a drive-in property on a metalled road with private parking, and cars of all sizes reach us in normal conditions. During heavy snowfall, typically in January and February, access can be temporarily disturbed — so if you are travelling then, do ask us about the current road situation before you start. Keeping a buffer day in your plan is always wise in peak winter.

What to carry for a snow trip

Pack heavy woollens, thermal innerwear, a waterproof outer jacket, and sturdy shoes with good grip for walking on snow. Add woollen caps, gloves, and moisturiser — mountain air is dry in winter. Sunscreen helps too, because sun on snow is deceptively strong. Beyond that, travel light: bedding warmth and hot water are taken care of at the property.

What to do on a snow day

Snow days at the shire are slow by design. Sit out on the lawn as the snow falls, warm up around a bonfire in the evening (arranged on request), or take in the white Himalayan view from the terrace swing.
